    Riparian Zone Workshops

San Geronimo Nature Center, Helotes Creek Nature Center, and San Antonio River Road Neighborhood Association present workshops on the riparian zone, the interaction between land and its adjacent body of water. These workshops will help participants understand how creeks work and the vital role that the adjacent riparian area plays in protecting water. Participants will be introduced to the basic interaction of hydrology, sediment movement, and vegetation—and how these can work together to stabilize creeks, improve water quality, and provide sustained flow during dry periods. For most of the last half century, landowners and conservation agencies have neglected the critical importance of creeks and riparian areas. Now that water has emerged as the number one natural resource issue in Texas, people are beginning to pay more attention to creeks and rivers and how to maintain or restore a healthy, functional riparian zone. The creek/riparian zone is a complex and sensitive part of the landscape and often poorly understood.

For more information, visit the Helotes Creek Nature Center website. To register, email contact information to info@helotescreeknaturecenter.org.

2010 Conference of the Texas Society for Ecological Restoration

The Texas Society for Ecological Restoration will be holding its 2010 Annual Conference on November 5-7, 2010. It promises to be an informative conference with great conversation, fun and camaraderie. The theme this year is “Restoration in Forests and Woodlands”. Five instructional field trips are being arranged for Friday, November 5th, including a biological overview while kayaking on Caddo Lake.

The keynote speaker is Dr. Dave Creech, Regent’s Professor at Stephen F. Austin State University, Nacogdoches, Texas. His research effort has focused alternative crop/alternative technology work, crop nutrition studies, new plant introductions for the ornamental horticulture industry, endangered plant rescue, research and reintroduction, and finding sustainable solutions to environmental concerns. Dr. Creech has authored numerous scholarly and trade articles and lectures widely. As an outreach of his position, Dr. Creech has accumulated a long list of international consultancies since 1981 to Pakistan, Guatemala, Mexico, Nepal, Israel and China. His latest work in China focuses on development of salt tolerant Taxodium distichum (bald cypress) for estuarine restoration.

Registration is NOW OPEN and Abstracts are being accepted. Please send abstracts to Jayne Neal. Abstracts should address a topic related to restoration. Preference will be given to abstracts that address the conference theme, "Restoration in Forests and Woodlands”.
